Why Find Something To Live For?
Well, this may seem like a no-brainer concept but hear me out here. Why address the need to find something to live for? Someone I know is going through tough times and it made me think about unhealthy behaviors. I’ve clearly seen these in my own past. And they still try to rear their ugly head from time to time. But you’ve surely heard the phrase, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result”, right? And as this person is going through it again, I started to wonder if he had any drive or purpose. However, I’m sure he does but he may not even be aware of it on the surface. Because it’s easily human nature to run on some automatic, programmed mode we picked up along the way.
So, is the life being pursued more important than family or future to this person? Maybe. It’s also quite possible many out there truly have something to live for but just don’t realize it, as I mentioned. Now like I said, I’m just as guilty of insanity and repeating behaviors that don’t serve me or those close to me. Therefore, this article and the need to find something to live for is essentially a aspiration to understand my own life better. Thanks for being here.

What’s Your Purpose?
As I was listening to Jordan B Peterson’s Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life Audible books, I started thinking about a story he shared. A girl he knew was suicidal and unable to function. Basically, Jordan she had nothing going for her and wasn’t doing anything constructive with her life. It’s possible she was a late bloomer. Apparently, she didn’t have the best upbringing either. I’m sure that’s a familiar story to most of us. So, how do you find something to live for without a foundation? We’re all probably coming from a position of being damaged, right? Is it possible those without a desire to go on simply haven’t realized the need for a purpose? Maybe. It’s possible they do have a goal but are simply blinded by some unseen force. I’ve been in some dark places, but it wasn’t for lack of trying.

So, you want to find something to live for. Where do you start? Well, I guess you start small. Come to grips with where you’re at and the current circumstances. Even the seemingly most successful people in life were required to facilitate some drive at some point, right? Start small, be patient with yourself and stay away from comparing yourself to others. If you find something to live for that drives you and still find yourself in dark places, accept the moment and focus on what you can control.

Find Something That Drives You
Like I mentioned previously, it’s my opinion that too many people are running on automatic, clicking their life away. It’s easy to become stuck or sedentary, right? I’ll be the first to admit, without a constant effort to be engaged in wholesome, purposeful endeavors, I can easily get sucked back into old habits. So, maybe you’re not like the girl Jordan B Peterson mentioned or the person I opened this article about. Do you know yourself and what you’re into? Have you considered your purpose and what drives you?
Try taking an inventory of your life. Write down in a journal or word document a list of the good and bad in your life. Without a doubt, this will help you get some bearing on your status and position. Therefore, if you don’t know where you’re at, how can you know where you’re going? Do you have a plan for your career or family? Putting into writing a list of assets and liabilities is a helpmeet to right your ship and prioritize where your energy should be directed to. Someone once compared a personal inventory to a bunch of junk in the back of a station wagon that ends up all over the dashboard once you hit the brakes!
Be Honest With Yourself
Depending on your station in life, you may already have a semi-firm foundation and direction. That’s great! I’m really happy for you. The experience and thoughts that sparked this blog article made me reflect on what helped me find something to live for. After I got sober back in 2007, I began the long, arduous process to fix the wreckage I had created in my career. And then I started doing the things I wanted to do in life. So, my unforgivable mistake would be picking up a drink and losing a whole lot at this juncture!
What does that look like for you? If you’re not a desirable path, do you have an idea of the path you would like to take? The honesty within us is absolutely a fleeting thing. And it’s such a fragile thing too. Therefore, you can use the inventory process I mentioned to determine the good and the bad in your life. (I apologize for repeating myself) Also, look at those in your life with options, legitimate life experience and insight. Without a doubt, asking someone who’s been there first, can be a wise decision. We all need someone who’s a straight shooter and won’t sugar coat things to help us find something to live for.
Full Disclosure
So, I want to state again for the record that in writing all of this on the need to find something to live for, my intentions are not to come off preachy, hyperbolic or overambitious. Like most of the content here, this topic was created out of a personal need to check my own life, goals and intentions. If I came off as self-righteous or condescending, I apologize. That was never my goal. Growing up in a dysfunctional family dynamic, a few of my siblings and I joke about how we learned much in life from bad examples on what not to moving forward. Furthermore, the experience with the aforementioned person going through a tough time, stemmed a need to reflect once again on my own life.
Do I need to find something to live for once again? Just like everyone out there I’m still a work in progress. So, the answer to that question is an emphatic yes! We’re all evolving, dynamic beings and the chaos of life has an effect on that evolution. Without a constant effort to keep old habits and unhealthy thoughts processes at bay, I can easily become the girl with nothing to live for. One day you’re on the top of the world and the next it can all come crashing down. Therefore, I try to be honest, humble, open-minded and all the while keeping one foot in the present reality and one in the unknown uncertainty of the future. Thanks for being here my friends and remember, This is Your Moment!
